BMW has built its reputation around engines that combine performance, refinement, and everyday usability. From compact four-cylinder turbocharged engines to powerful V8s, BMW offers a wide range of powertrains designed for different drivers and different purposes. But what really separates a BMW four-cylinder from a six-cylinder or an eight-cylinder engine?

The trade-off is increased fuel consumption, weight, and complexity compared with a four-cylinder. A six-cylinder BMW will also generally cost more to purchase and operate.
For enthusiasts, however, the inline-six often represents a sweet spot. It combines everyday usability with strong performance and the smooth, distinctive character associated with BMW.
BMW 8-Cylinder Engines: Maximum Performance and Character
BMW’s V8 engines occupy the performance end of the range. They are typically found in higher-performance models where acceleration, power, and engine character are major priorities.
A V8 has eight cylinders arranged in two banks, allowing BMW to produce substantial power and torque. Modern BMW V8s are usually turbocharged, giving them enormous low- and mid-range torque.
The sensation behind the wheel is noticeably different. Acceleration can be extremely strong, and the engine can continue producing power at speeds where smaller engines may begin to feel less energetic.
Sound is another important part of the V8 experience. While modern emissions regulations, turbochargers, and exhaust systems have changed the character of BMW engines, a V8 generally provides a deeper and more muscular sound than a four- or six-cylinder engine.
There are disadvantages, though. V8 engines are heavier, more expensive, and generally less fuel-efficient. They also contain more components, which can mean higher maintenance and repair costs as the vehicle ages.
For someone who wants maximum performance and places a high value on engine character, the V8 offers an experience that smaller engines cannot completely replicate.
